Angus Konstam sets sail through the brutal history of piracy, separating myth from legend and fact from fiction. Pirates takes us into the depths of the pirate's dark world, examining the many colorful characters from Cretans and Vikings to French corsairs and the British rogues of the golden age of piracy, such as Blackbeard and Captain Kidd and even two women pirates, Mary Read and Ann Bonny, who became pregnant to avoid execution. A blood-soaked, riveting account, it provides a complete history of the fearsome threat on the high seas from the marauders in the pages of antiquity to the Somali pirates in the headlines of today.

From the Back Cover
The word “pirate” instantly conjures a fearsome figure in a tricorner hat, brandishing a cutlass on the quarterdeck of a helpless victim’s ship. The skull and crossbones have become instantly recognizable the world over, a symbol of lawlessness and rebellion. But if you think piracy is all about the Jolly Roger, a bottle o’ rum, and walking the plank, think again. The reality, much more complex, spans all of human history. From Cretans and Vikings to French corsairs and British rogues, sail through the brutal history of piracy, separating myth from legend and fact from fiction. Pirates takes you into the depths of the pirate’s dark world, examining the colorful characters of the golden age of piracy such as Blackbeard and Captain Kidd and even two women pirates who became pregnant to avoid death sentences. A blood-soaked, riveting account, Pirates offers a complete history of the fearsome threat on the high seas, from the marauders in the pages of antiquity to the Somali pirates in the headlines of today.

Comprehensive, yet dry
By D. Bledsoe
This is a pretty comprehensive look at pirates from the first "Sea Peoples" through the Buccaneers, the "Golden Age," and into the modern era. And for that, it is surprisingly unique in the available literature.
That said, the writing is rather dry. It contains a lot of names and dates and expeditions but the author doesn't weave much of a story into the events and I found myself skimming through a lot of the book.
Also, the accounts aren't always as well researched. For example, much of the Buccaneers chapter parrots much of the work of Alexander Exquemelin without bringing in alternative perspectives or giving any account of the viability of Exquemelin's accounts.
As a compliment, I've been listening to "The Pirate History Podcast" and have found a wealth of information missing from this book along with a better narrative take.
I would recommend this book as a reference, but not as an entertaining history read.

This was the second book I read on pirates. Angus knows his history. Another fascinating read of those times in history. Pick it up. You won't be disappointed.
